News from Gulu (2013)

I’m in Uganda working on a USAID funded development project now, and while I found the Kampala section of your guide to be excellent I wanted to let you know that some updates are needed for Gulu. A few of the things I have found include:

  • Serenity Café – Closed or under new ownership
  • Iron Donkey – Closed or under new ownership
  • BJ’s – Still much more of a bar than anything else, but they do have a few light food items now
  • Northern Indian restaurant – Not listed in your guide, but excellent Indian food on the north side of town
  • Florida Hotel restaurant – Not listed in your guide, but a wide range of Ethiopian, Indian, and international fare that wasn’t bad
  • Umoja Forex – Closed, so the only non-bank forex in town appears to be Jetset on Jomo Kenyatta Road
  • Dove’s Nest Inn – Really shouldn’t be recommended or considered a good value any longer. Broken A/C, power outages, running toilet, odd breakfasts, and towels that strangely smell like corn chips mean that the place has slipped. The Acholi hasn’t gotten any better, so the best option by far for moderate price level accommodations is the Bomah Hotel.
