Newly opened in October 2018 and still developing, Nile Backpackers (nilebackpackers.com) stands around the corner from Gulu’s popular Serenity (formerly Sankofa) Cafe and has 4 ensuite rooms, 2 dorm style rooms with 4 beds each and 2 tents. However the ensuite rooms have a touch of luxury with AC, TV and nicely furnished rooms with a sort of luxury safari Africa motif. The outdoor fire pit is intimate and a great way to relax with a drink after a long day of driving. There is a full bar with many choices of top shelf spirits and the usual choices of beers. The food is the usual fare: fried or stewed chicken, stew beef, etc with rice or chips, but the food was tasty and good portions. At Ush 20,000 per plate the food is priced a bit high. The en-suite rooms are Ush 70,000 and to me worth it for the sparkling clean, well decorated rooms with hot water and AC. The dorm beds are Ush 35,000 with shared bath. Very nice people. I found this place to be a small quaint oasis on the long road from Kampala to Kidepo.
