Kumi Hotels

I would recommend giving the Green Top Hotel a miss – I seemed to be the only guest staying and was given a tiny room with a very shabby bathroom – the food was pretty poor too. The Kumi Hotel maybe double the price of Green Tops but it is worth paying the difference. Tom North, June 08

Our experience of the Green Top Hotel is much better! They have a range of rooms, most of which are very good, clean and nicely furnished. The EFOD volunteers (Engineers for Overseas Development) working on building Shalom International School for TESS (Teso Educational Support Services) at Kapir, have been staying here for two weeks at a time for the past 6 months and have been very satisfied. If you’re not happy with the room you have been shown, ask for another – there are plenty!

There will soon be another alternative! One of the first buildings which will be completed at Shalom School in Kapir (hopefully by May 2012) will be the Guest House, next to Atiira Primary School and only 150m from the main road. It is exactly half way between Kumi and Soroti, 23km from each. It offers 5 twin bedded en-suite rooms with meals provided if required. Phone 0772 330601 for more information and booking. Staying there will help benefit the local community and the development of Shalom School which is only just beginning (see http://www.tess.uk.net). There are lovely walks around, up the rocky hill nearby and down to Awoja swamp and lake. The primary school welcomes visits. It is possible to arrange to go on the lake near Ngora (Akuja) to look for the rare and prehistoric-looking Shoebill Stork – phone Bishop Charles Obaikol (0772 557909) or William Ojulong (0772 581913)
